About the piece:
Community Art - Avian uses a custom database of bird songs and environmental recordings
to automatically generate a sound collage that is intended to capture the dynamics, sounds, and essence of birds.
The spatial movements of sound, rustling of compressed energy, and distant sounds of storms create a composite
soundscape that evokes the dynamism of avian flocks. The soundscape is in constant flux as a genetic algorithm
perpetually evolves populations of musical structures that are realized by the computer. Rhythmic patterns, group
spatial movements, and coherent phrase structures emerge from the algorithm, and provide shape and diversity to
the sound mass.
The computer monitor displays the ever changing musical features of the evolving soundscape as two hemispherical
speakers project sound into the gallery.
